AL leader among 12 accused over deaths at Sylhet stone quarry, death toll rises to 5


A local Awami League leader has been accused in a case over the deaths of five workers in a landslide at a stone quarry in Sylhet.

Ali Amzad Hossain, president of Companiganj Upazila Awami League, is among those accused in the case started by the family of a victim, Nasir Mia, said Companiganj police OC Shafiqur Rahman Khan.

Five workers died at a Kalairag quarry after a landslide hit them on Sunday. Nasir Mia is the son of Atabur Rahman.

The case names seven people and accuses five others unidentified, said Khan.

Labour leader Abdur Rouf, who was detained immediately after the incident, has been shown arrested in the case and raids are ongoing to arrest other suspects.

Meanwhile, The body of another worker was recovered from the stone quarry in Karaibagh area of Bholaganj quarry in Companiganj upazila on Monday afternoon, raising the death from the accident to 5.

The deceased was identified as Moin Uddin, 30, son of Rois Uddin, resident of Kolkta village in Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj district.

Earlier, the mud of the stone quarry collapsed on the workers while they were extracting stones by operating generator around 9:30pm on Sunday.

Later, police recovered two bodies at night.

Police started their drive again in the quarry around 9am Monday and recovered three more bodies till afternoon.

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Railway Nirapotta Bahini (RNB) also joined in the 8-hour rescue drive.
