Country to observe ‘National Jute Day’ on Mar 6

The Ministry of Textiles and Jute took out a colourful procession on Dhaka’s Manik Miah Avenue on Friday ahead of National Jute Day on Mar 6.

The “National Jute Day” will be observed for the first time from this year as part of the government’s sustained efforts to revive the golden era of jute which had been the country’s number one export earner until the late 70s.

“From now on, the National Jute Day will be observed on March 6 each year in the country,” State Minister for Jute and Textiles Mirza Azam said at a stakeholders’ meeting held at his ministry yesterday, said a press release.

According to the decision, concerned people from unions, upazilas, districts, divisions and the capital would be involved during the colourful observance of the day.

The Bangladesh diplomatic missions abroad would also be involved in it.
To mark the day, a three-day fair of jute products would also be organised at the Bangabandhu Interna­tional Conference Centre (BICC).

Representatives from Bangladesh Jute Association, Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association, Bangladesh Jute Goods Exporters Association and Bangladesh Jute Mills Association held separate meetings with Mirza Azam yesterday to observe the Jute Day colorfully.

The state minister expressed the hope that jute would again contribute significantly to materialise the nation’s aspiration to become a middle-income country by the year 2021, a year that would coincide with the 50 years of the birth of the nation state.
