RAB raids Foyzur’s village home, uncle detained

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have conducted a raid at the village home of noted writer Muhammed Zafar Iqbal’s attacker Foyzur Rahman.

During the raid early Sunday, the elite force detained Foyzur’s uncle Abdul Kahhar, 50, from their home at Jagadal village of Derai upazila in the district.

Jafar Iqbal, a professor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), came under a knife attack at a programme on the campus on Saturday.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, RAB Sunamganj company commander Foysal Ahmed said Abdul Kahhar had been brought to their office for interrogation.

Immediately after the attack, SUST students caught the attacker, Foyzur.

Law enforcement also conducted a raid at the residence of the attacker at Sheikhpara of Kumargaon near the university.

Sylhet’s Jalalabad police station officer-in-charge Shafiqur Rahman said they conducted the raid at the residence around midnight on Sunday. As the house was under lock and key, the police had to break open the door, he added.

Foyzur’s maternal uncle Fazlur Rahman was staying inside the house though. Police brought him to the police station for interrogation, said Shafiqur Rahman.

Soon after the attack, Zafar Iqbal was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital. Later, he was shifted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka for better treatment.

Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) director lieutenant colonel Rashedul Hasan said professor Zafar Iqbal has been undergoing treatment at CMH and is now out of danger.
