The deceased are the members of notorious gang ‘Hasan Bahini’, said Hasan Al Rajib, wing commander of RAB-8.

When a patrol team of RAB-8 chased a trawler in the Bhaleshwar river around 6:00am the gang members took shelter in Majherchar, he said.

When the RAB members reached the spot, the pirates opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

In Brahmanbaria, a man was killed in a reported gunfight in Nabinagar of Brahmanbaria early today. Police identified him a pirate.

The deceased is Javed Mia.

Javed was arrested on Sunday night. Following his information the police conducted a raid to seize arms in the Haorbhanga bridge of Kaittala area, said Nabinagar police station officer-in-charge Aslam Shikder.

As the police approached the bridge, Javed Mia’s collaborator bandits opened fire and in response the police also opened fire while Javed was killed.

Aslam Shikder added that five police members were also injured.

The law enforcement’s version of the events were, however, not verified independently as no version of the incidents were available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the victim’s family.
