A Sylhet court has given police 10 days to grill a suspect in the Mar 3 attack on Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal.

The celebrated writer and university teacher is the latest victim of a series of attacks on secular writers, bloggers and online activists in Bangladesh.

On Mar 3, Prof Iqbal sustained stab injuries in the back, arm and the head from a sharp weapon during an open-air event at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet.

The attacker, identified as 24-year-old madrasa student Faizul Hasan alias Shafiqur, was nabbed by teachers and students immediately. He was later handed over to law enforcers.

The SUST authorities started an anti-terror case next day bringing charges of attempted murder against Faizul and few other unidentified people.

On Thursday, police produced him before a court in Sylhet and secured an order to grill him in custody for 10 days.
