There were no members of law enforcement in the area around 6:00am when the BNP leader took out the procession demanding release of party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

The procession was organised as part of the party’s scheduled procession programme in all thanas of the capital, protesting the foiling of a BNP programme on Thursday.

Party insiders said Rizvi has been staying in the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters since 30 January to avoid arrest.

A special court sent BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia to jail on 8 February after sentencing her to five years in jail in a graft case.

Over 5,000 party activists were arrested across the country centring on Khaleda’s incarceration.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the authorities are selectively arresting party organisers so that they cannot forge a street campaign against the government.

Talking to Prothom Alo, Rizvi said, “There is an arrest warrant against me and that’s why I took part in the scheduled programme early morning.”
