PM asks Navy to help tap marine resources

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday asked Bangladesh Navy to play its due role in tapping the country’s huge marine resources for its economic development.

“The Navy will have to play its due role in protecting the sovereignty of the maritime areas as disputes on those with India and Myanmar have been peacefully settled,” she said.

The Prime Minister was addressing a function at BNS Issa Khan Parade Ground on the occasion of awarding National Standard to BN Dockyard and inauguration of Bangabandhu Complex at Bangladesh Naval Academy.

She said Bangladesh Navy has to work to implement various programmes relating to ‘blue economy’.

The Prime Minister expressed her hope that Navy personnel will discharge their duties more effectively and successfully being inspired with the spirit of the Liberation War.

Hasina said handing over National Standard to BN Dockyard will remain as a glorious chapter in the history of Bangladesh Navy.

She expressed her firm optimism that the BN Dockyard will continue playing role to further strengthen capability and dignity of the Navy through rendering services more effectively.

Hasina said BN Dockyard is performing its responsibilities with patriotism and professional efficiency for maintenance of three dimensional and high technology-based various warships and submarines.

Mentioning that BN Dockyard has achieved self-reliance in the maintenance of warships maintaining international standard, she said its gloating Dock BNFD Sundarban and BN Slipway have completed successful docking and maintenance of over 1000 local and foreign warships.

The Prime Minister said the government has been implementing various programmes to modernise and strengthen the capability of Bangladesh Navy for which it has now been well-established as a three dimensional force.

Laying emphasis on ensuring international standard training for the members of the Navy, Hasina said Bangabandhu Complex having all the modern facilities was just inaugurated for the purpose.

Hasina said Bangladesh formally started its journey as a developing country and this recognition is a pride for the nation.

Bangladesh moved another step ahead in the path of building ‘Golden Bangladesh’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she said.

On her arrival at BN Dockyard, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahmed and Commodore Superintendent of the Dockyard Commodore Moinul Haque received the Prime Minister.

She was given state salute as national anthem was played at that time. An attractive parade of different units of Bangladesh Navy was also arranged on the occasion. The Prime Minister inspected the parade and took salute.

She handed over the National Flag to the Commanding Officer of the BN Dockyard Imtiyaz Uddin.
