2 killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with DB, police.

Two people were killed in Dhaka and Magura in what law enforcement claimed as gunfights in the small hour of Friday.

In Dhaka, the detective branch (DB) of police said a man was killed in a gunfight with in Diabari area of the city early on Friday. Deceased Zahirul Islam is a suspected robber, claimed the DB police.

“Local people caught Zahirul while he was committing robbery at a house in Dakkhinkhan area on Thursday. Later, they beat up the robber and handed over him to police,” said DB police officer-in-charge Tapan Kumar Saha.

On Thursday night, a team of police along with the detainee went to Diabari to arrest his gang members. But, sensing the presence of the law enforcement, associates of Zahirul opened fire on them, prompting the police members to retaliate around 4:00am, he said.

Zahirul caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries, OC Tapan said.

Zahirul Islam was taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

In Magura, another person was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Shonpur area of sadar upazila early Friday.

The deceased is Fakhrul Sheikh, 42, son of a certain Nurul Islam Sheikh, a resident of Jagdal area.

Additional superintendent of police in Magura Tariqul Islam said being tipped off that a gang of robber was taking preparation for committing robbery near Magura-Jessore road, a team of police conducted a drive around 2:00am.

Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight.

Fakhrul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, he said.

The robber was accused in 10 cases including robbery, Tariqul Islam added.

Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the law enforcement’s versions of those events independently as no version of those incidents was available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the victims’ families.
