BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul hospitalised with chest pains

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been admitted to a Dhaka hospital.

BNP Vice Chairman Dr AJDM Zahid Hossain said Mirza Fakhrul has been placed on ‘full rest’ at the CCU at Gulshan’s United Hospital.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul hospitalised with chest pains.

“He experienced chest pains while at home this morning and was rushed to the hospital,” Hossain told on Monday. “He is receiving care under the supervision of heart specialist Dr Momenuzzaman.”

Fakhrul’s mother Fatima Amin was also recently admitted to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital due to complications from old age. The senior BNP leader was preparing to visit her in hospital when he himself experienced the medical episode.

Mirza Fakhrul was diagnosed with a carotid artery block while in prison in 2016. He later received treatment in the US and Singapore.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman took over as acting chairman following his mother’s imprisonment over a graft case on Feb 8. But Rahman has lived in London for a decade ever since a court sentenced him to prison over a money laundering case.

Mirza Fakhrul and the members of the BNP Standing Committee have been organising the party and holding demonstrations calling for the BNP chief’s release.
