The landslide occurred around 11:30am in the Monjoypara area in Ward-9, said Ghumdhum Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Aziz.

Five workers were constructing a sewage canal on the property of a Shupayan Barua when the incident occurred, he told. Light rains may have triggered the landslide as the crew was working near the side of the hill.

One of the workers, Belal, was rescued and admitted to Naikhangchhari Upazila Hospital for treatment.

“The remaining four are still trapped,” said Abdul Aziz. “We fear they may be dead. We have been unable to get them out. Locals are trying. Fire service personnel have just arrived. We will continue our efforts.”

The Fire Service Chattogram Control Room said that four units from Chakoria, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar and Satkania have left for Ghumdhum. The Cox’s Bazar unit arrived at the scene at 3pm.

“The locals have rescued one person alive and sent them to the hospital,” said Fire Service Fire Leader Sujoy Barua told.

“They say four others are trapped. We will begin work soon. More details will be available later.”
